Tips For Algae Control In Your Pond Or Aquarium
Algae control is very important if you have an aquarium, pond or water garden. There are a lot of different types of algae and much of algae control deals with food availability and light. If you get rid of the algae’s food source then it cannot grow. There are many products you can use to stop algae growth.
Most algae do require light in order to grow. So you need to limit the amount of natural light that your aquarium gets. Try to place your tank somewhere that only gets direct sun for short periods of time. If you use an aquarium light then it should not be on for more than 12 hours.
To ensure that nutrients do not build up in the water which the algae can use to grow, you should change the water frequently and install a filter system. There are plenty of options for removing nutrients such as reverse osmosis, deionised water and adsorption resins. You also can stock your pond or aquarium with fish that specifically eat algae like the sucker mouth catfish.
There are four different types of algae that can be issues; these include blue-green algae, brown algae, red or brush algae and green algae. Brown algae will probably be the first algae you will have to deal with and this algae does not need light to grow.
Most fish will eat green algae. Red or brush algae tend to occur in high pHs and can be hard to get rid off and the blue green algae will actually look very slimy.
If you have a pond then you should invest in a good pump system as this will keep the water clean and in constant motion. Also any products you use should be natural and non toxic to the fish and other plant life in the water.
