How to Practice Responsible Fish Keeping
Responsible fish keeping starts with how you set up your aquarium. Make sure that the aquarium can accommodate the fish you want. Many people believe that fish will swell to the size of the aquarium. Preventing them from growing to their fullest size by keeping them in a small tank is dangerous for the fish. Ultimately, you have to provide your fish a bigger tank if they outgrow their smaller tank.
Find out as much as you can about the fish that you plan to keep, to know what size of aquarium you need to get for them. It is best to factor in the adult size of the fish when choosing the size of the aquarium. But if you got a small aquarium and later it became too small for your fish, then upgrade as soon as possible to the appropriate size.
Before buying different species of fish, find out first if they will co-exist peacefully in your aquarium. Responsible fish keeping dictates that you ensure the safety of your fish from other fish in the aquarium and that your aquarium provides the right water temperature and pH levels to sustain all the fish in the tank. Refrain also from buying too many fish because even if your aquarium might accommodate their numbers and sizes, the oxygen in the water might not be enough for all of them.
If your fish or aquatic plants become too big for their aquarium, never release them in a pond, stream, or other wild environment. Unfortunately, many people do this when their fish grow much larger than they originally thought they would, and it can wreak havoc on the local ecosystem. If your fish survive, they may begin breeding and eventually kill off native species.
Many tropical species found in aquariums simply can’t survive the temperatures outdoors, especially during winter, so setting them free outside is essentially a death sentence. Instead, upgrade their tank size or return your fish to the pet store.
Aside from getting the right aquarium, you also need other aquarium equipment like a water filter and a heater. These are important for the good health and comfort of your fish. The type and specifications will again depend on the needs of your fish. Be sure that they are working properly before putting in your fish.
Responsible fish keeping dictates that you regularly change the water in your tank even if you already have a water filter installed. A weekly test of your tank’s water condition is also a must. Check that only acceptable levels of pH, nitrite and ammonia are present.
Some of your fish may be small but that does not mean that you can just disregard them or that they will survive with less care than what you are giving to the other fish. Do not forget to feed your fish. Make sure that they receive proper nutrition. Find out the best kind of food for them.
Responsible fish keeping means making a commitment to keeping their environment as healthy as possible.

Naturally Clean A Koi Pond
In order to have a beautiful, healthy and clean koi pond, regular maintenance is typically required. There are many fungi and insects that grow in an environment such as a pond, their waste is known to contaminate the water and possibly hurt or kill the fish. In a healthy, clean pond, the balance between the nutrients and orgasms is very delicate. Many foreign objects can throw the balance out of whack. This can be very detrimental to the wildlife that the pond supports.
For many years, the only way to clean a pond was to use harsh chemicals which weren’t good for the environment. Nowadays, with attention to products being eco-friendly, there are better choices for naturally cleaning ponds. These cleaners use all naturally derived ingredients that don’t introduce foreign chemical based products into the water.
Here are a few things to think about when looking for a natural cleaner.
1. Make sure it is safe. The health of the pond is only one thing to consider when thinking about safety. Children and pets that may be in contact with the pond should be safe also.
2. Make sure the product is safe. Keep in mind the living things that will be around the area. Pets, fish, and children will, in some way, will come in contact with the pond. Therefore, the cleaning product should be gentle enough for them.
3. Make sure it is effective. Do a little research to investigate the cleaning companies that may be in question. Don’t be afraid to call and get more information if not completely satisfied.
Having a beautiful, clean koi pond will brighten any back yard. Using a natural cleaner such as Bioverse produces can help maintain the pond and keep the fish and its surroundings healthy.

Designing An Aquarium
When first designing an aquarium, there are unlimited numbers of possibilities for design. Decorating an aquarium can be fun, but the decorations still have to be suitable for the fish. Fish feel more secure with more hiding places. If you have only a few decorations in the tank the fish will not feel secure and not swim around the tank as much. Finding a balance of a habitat the fish and you like is key for raising fish.
First, when designing an aquarium the essentials are needed such as lights, filters and heaters. The tank first needs the filters, depending on your size of tank, depends on how many filters you have. A lid for your aquarium is vital for the fishes’ health. A lid protects them from outside dangers, and also can provide light. A lid is highly suggested for an aquarium hobbyist.
Depending on your lid, most lids have a place cut out for the filters to conveniently fit into, and if not you can cut a make shift hole in the lid for the filters.
Heaters are necessary for fish life, but can get in the way. Make sure to put them in a place out of the way of the fish. Submersible heaters work the best. Just to be safe put at least tow heaters in your tank so that if one stops working the fish will still have one heater to regulate the habitat.
Gravel or sand is vital for the fish to have a similar habitat that they are use to. Smaller gravel can be a hassle and huge gravel can engulf many things. Medium size gravel is suggested for most tanks. If you have marine fish then sand is suggested, but can be hard to put many decorations in, such as plants.
Gravel or sand is vital for the fish to have a similar habitat that they are use to. The smaller the gravel is usually the harder it is to manage. The gravel that is too large can trap things including fish under it. I suggest a happy medium sized gravel. Sand is also great, especially if you own marine fish. If you have freshwater or even brackish water fish, I would suggest gravel instead of sand.

Tank Size And Supplies Advice
Owning an aquarium can be a rewarding and fun hobby and even job. Raising fish can either be very easy or become difficult and frustrating, but can be prevented with a few steps. Some choices that are vital for success are your tank, filters, heaters, lights and decor. Starting with a bigger tank will save you a lot of trouble in the long run. What does a bigger tank provide you may ask? At least a twenty-gallon fish tank is suitable for a novice. Keep in mind the inch per gallon rule when buying fish. This rule insures that your fish have enough space in the tank and good to follow to avoid overcrowding. For every inch of fish there should be at least a gallon.
My motto is the bigger tank the better. When I was beginning my first aquarium I made the mistake of buying too small a tank. To start your first tank I would suggest at least a twenty-gallon tank. What does a bigger tank provide you may ask? A bigger tank the pH is easier to maintain, and there is more room for error, and there is more room for fish. The rule to follow is the inch per gallon rule, this rule insures that you have enough space for your fish and can avoid overcrowding. For every inch of fish there should be at least a gallon. If you have a twenty-gallon tank then you can have two ten inch fish, or five two inch fish, any combination of fish as long as the inches of fish do not exceed the gallons of water the fish tank holds.
Filters are very important for a healthy tank, there are many types of filters and all get the same job done. Some common styles are: power filters, Bio wheel filters, internal filters, and under gravel filters. Power and bio wheel filters are probably the most efficient and easiest filters to maintain. They hang over the side into the tank and have cartridges that have to be changed about one a month. The under gravel filters have their benefits and drawbacks. They are an older style filter and are placed at the bottom of the tank under the gravel. They do not have cartridges that have to be changes monthly but can get gummed up and have to be taken completely out to clean. They also usually will not clean as well as a power or bio wheel filter but can be made at home and are cheaper.
Usually heaters are fairly the same, submersible heaters are the way to go. Usually it’s a good idea to have two heaters in the tank so that if one breaks you have another going so the fish have a temperature that they can survive in.
Lighting is important if you have live plants in your aquarium so they can flourish. Most lids for the tanks come with a standard fluorescent bulb, but brighter bulbs are advised for optimal lighting for aquarium plants.
Lastly, any decor and extra utilities like bubblers can be added for look and to help the fish have a happy and secure habitat.

Fresh or Plastic Plants: Choosing Aquarium Plants
A cleverly decorated aquarium has the ability to enhance the attractiveness of any room in your home or office. Your choice of decorations doesn’t just depend on aesthetic values but also on its effect on your fish. Aquarium plants would be a good choice because not only do they add color to your aquarium, they also bring comfort to the fish by providing hiding spots for them.
There are two types of aquariums plants that you can put in your aquarium- real plants or fake plants. Both have their advantages and disadvantages. A careful study of both types will help you decide which is better for your aquarium.
Plastic plants are long lasting and very easy to clean. You only need to take them out of the aquarium and wash with soap and water. The colors are varied and sometimes even more vivid than real plants. Although you have to be careful about the too bright colors or it might stress your fish. Some of them will adjust their colors to a less vibrant color in order to be less conspicuous to predators. Better stick to the more natural marine tones to bring out the natural bright colors of your fish.
There are also aquarium plants that are made of silk. They are a little more expensive but they appear more realistic and are easier to care for than other plastic plants. It is important to buy only silk plants that are designed for aquariums and not those found in craft stores that may contain chemicals that are harmful to your fish.
Fresh plants are of course, the most natural looking. Like some kinds of fish, though, they can be very hard to maintain. Some of them will thrive only under specific water temperatures or pH levels. Find the fresh plants whose specific needs are compatible with the water requirements of your fish.
Fresh plants also have the advantage of being natural food to some fish. They could even be the preferred breeding grounds for some varieties of fish. They also help in maintaining balance in the nitrogen cycle of your aquarium.
Although, fresh plants may appear to have many benefits, most varieties have special requirements that may discourage some people from using them. Many of them need lighting and special fertilizers. All fresh plants need light for photosynthesis. The amount of light required by these plants may vary depending on their kind. A special aquarium fertilizer is also a requirement for most plants. You cannot use your ordinary garden fertilizer. This will most likely kill your aquarium.
Cleaning fresh aquarium plants is more difficult than cleaning fake ones because you’ll have to clean them where they are planted. Decaying plant matter means a lot of waste at the bottom of your tank, which can reduce water quality. Products like EcoBio-Block can help keep your water healthy by providing a continual source of beneficial bacteria that breaks down organic waste, such as decaying plants, into safer by-products. Prune dying parts of the plant just like you would prune your houseplants. Healthy live plants improve your aquarium habitat, but if not cared for properly, they can reduce your water quality. Only you decide whether fresh aquarium plants are worth the additional maintenance.
