Fish as a Pet

by Fred Turner

A great way to have a pet, and still it not be too much of a pain to take care of is to get a fish tank. Fish tanks are a great way to provide your young child with the opportunity to have a pet, but not have to worry when they leave the work to you! Adults and children both enjoy a fish tank and once you get the main setup it won’t cost you that much money to upkeep.

When you begin the planning of a purchase of a fish tank you need to decide what type of fish you want to place into the tank. Salt water takes a lot of time so most likely a nice bunch of fresh water fish would be a great choice. Perhaps paint the wall the tank will be by a color that will help to offset the fish even more.

Lighting is very important in the room too. A nice setup of track lighting above the tank will help to highlight the tank even more. If you have lamp shades you can get them to go with the color you have painted the wall. Make sure you link the different ideas together, and have everything play off the addition of the fish tank in the room.

Adding an area rug under the tank stand is a great way to add more to the room. Plus it will help if you accidentally spill water on the floor; a cute little design of a fish on a rug or some color that you have decided on the wall. Area rugs are a great way to tie the entire look of the room together.

Now that you have gone to all the trouble of creating this wonderful focal point you will want to keep it looking nice. Do not allow your fish tank to become dirty and if this can not be helped clean it immediately. A dirty fish tank is not just bad to look at. It will smell terrible and can cause your fish to become ill. Do not allow a dirty fish tank to ruin your decor or harm your new pets, speak with a pet shop employee to learn the best way to care for your fish and their home.

You should make sure that you complete the room, by rearranging what is in there. Place the fish tank in a place where it is easily seen by anyone who enters the room. And try to get the seating around the focal point so that it is easily enjoyed.

Fish can be a fun pet, and a great way for your child to learn to take care of animals. Go look at some nice tanks and see what you can come up with!

How to Take Care of Your Fish – A Few Tips

by Anika Woods

Today’s pollution makes is harder for people to get close to nature and live in a green environment. Just like apartment plants, the aquariums are small pieces of nature brought indoor. Because of the bad water and air, people are trying their best to preserve these green ecosystems. Nowadays the tanks are built by people with a lot of skills and they look a lot like real water environments. But with that, the aquarium still remains a copy of the real nature.

Some of the tanks built today are full of options like lowering or raising the water level or the light intensity. You can do that automatically due to some range of switches which allow you to change the light or the water level when ever you want, for how long you want.

The filtration systems help keep the water clean and also the pollutants level to a minimum. Besides that, in your tank you can put a lot of plants and fish and the automatic mechanisms keep them healthy. Automatic devices tend to do everything. They can even feed the fish and dosage the food level. Today, the intelligent tanks come in many shapes and sizes and the electrical system in them is very advanced.

The result is a beautiful aquarium that can help you relax after a hard day at work and choosing one has become an easy task. The offer on the market is quite large and diverse. You can choose depending on the size, walls thickness, weight or security. The larger tanks have a weight of 20 gallons. The walls are usually made of glass and they are joined together by silicon sealants.

Does this silicon sealant affect the fish? The majority of the sealants used in tanks are non-toxic. But you should always be careful and choose tanks where the sealant is less or more than 1 mm or 1/16 inches.

Where do I put the aquarium? Which is the best place? Before choosing a place for the aquarium, you should take into consideration a few characteristics like the tank size, the type of the fish or the light levels. For example, an aquarium should be placed on a sturdy stand. You can calculate the size of the tank by multiplying the length of it, the width, height and the water capacity. If you have a gallon of water in the tank, then your tank weights around 10 pounds with just the water. For larger tanks multiply the result by 1000. Besides making sure that the stand is strong enough, also make sure the floor under the stand can support the tank. Place the aquarium close to the wall or right against it. It is safer this way. It is good to avoid placing the tank in spots with high traffic or near doors or windows.

How do I pick the aquarium equipment? Besides a strong stand, you need some things for tank maintenance. You will need a heater, thermostat, lighting system, and a good filtration system. There are many filtration systems to choose from: mechanical, chemical or biological. You will need a bucket and a net to clean the water and of course, a lot of fish food. Also, buy some plants or other objects of decoration: stones, roots and sand. Don’t forget about different substances to keep the water clean: chlorine or other water conditioners. In addition, you will need a bucket and net.

What criteria should I use in choosing filters? There are many filtration systems. Some are biological, some chemical, or mechanical. Either one is good but you should talk to a person from the pet shop because sometimes, different fish species need a specific kind of filtration system. Always keep in mind that the filters include internal, external, and the under-gravel filtration systems. The under-gravel is less recommended. The medium price for a good system is around $150.

Fishing for Fun

by Fred Turner

A great way to have a pet, and still it not be too much of a pain to take care of is to get a fish tank. Fish tanks are a great way to provide your young child with the opportunity to have a pet, but not have to worry when they leave the work to you! Adults and children both enjoy a fish tank and once you get the main setup it won’t cost you that much money to upkeep.

When designing your room pick out the type of aquarium and the type of fish you will put in it first. This will help you decide on a color scheme. If you are going to use tropical fish use a teal wall coloring. For a more common breed of fish use a darker blue. Even if you do not want your entire room this color it will look fantastic on the wall behind the fish tank.

How you light your room is important as well. Your fish tank will provide some light to the room. If you will be using the room for things that require a lot of light consider track lighting. This could be placed above the aquarium to highlight it and in other areas for practical usage. If the room will only need mood lighting, consider matching the lamp shades in the room to whatever shade of light is given off by your fish tank. This will give the room a flowing feeling and accentuate your color scheme.

A great way to help place more focus on the tank is to get an area rug to go into the room. Placing it under the tank will be a great way to help soak up water if you happen to spill any when you go to clean the tank.

Don’t forget that you will need to ensure that the tank stays clean. It would be dumb to take all the time to get a nice focus point of the room to only let it get dirty. Fish will start to smell if you don’t clean the tank often enough and the fish will also get sick if you keep the tank in poor condition.

You should make sure that you complete the room, by rearranging what is in there. Place the fish tank in a place where it is easily seen by anyone who enters the room. And try to get the seating around the focal point so that it is easily enjoyed.

Fish for pets are a great idea and a great way to enjoy some lovely creatures. Enjoy the peaceful serenity of the fish in the water.

The Uniqueness Of Freshwater Angelfish

by Joe Miles

Freshwater Angelfish are a very popular choice of tropical fish for any fish lover. Angelfish are curious about their surroundings; they will even swim over to greet you during feeding time. They are great pets, however during the breed time they can become territorial.

Angelfish enjoy a varied diet and love eating just about any type of fish food, whether it is live, frozen, freeze-dried or flakes. Because of the elongated body shape, they do best living in tall tanks. Water that is slightly acidic is the best choice for their fish tank.

These tropical fish grow up to six inches long, and a full-grown angelfish will measure taller than they are lengthwise. Angelfish need a large tank of a minimum fifteen gallons for a pair.

When you want to raise more than two Angelfish or when you plan to breed them, you will need at least a 25-gallon aquarium. Keep in mind that fish pair together when breeding, therefore they are not tolerant of any other tropical fish entering into their territory.

One of the most popular angelfish is the tropical black fish. Black lace angels are similar to silvers in appearance, but with a lacey look on its fins. A rare color pattern of angelfish is the half-black tropical fish. The front of the fishes body is white and the back part is black.

What do scientists think about the unique patterns of Angelfish? They think that there is hidden synchronization in the designs of nature. In popular scientific theory, the stripes of fish occur by the chemical waves during the embryonic stage of fish life.

The South American Black Lace Angelfish are one of the most exquisite freshwater fish you can find. They are charming in any aquarium with their elegantly graceful fins. They also grow larger than the average Angelfish.

You will need to include some driftwood and rock formations in your fish tank, since tropical fish need an area where they can retreat and hide when they feel threatened. This is especially true of the black Angelfish. You may wish to add some plant life for the fish to nibble. One of the reasons why we call these fish Angelfish is because they have such a good temperament.

Most often, when you have a male and a female in the same tank they will form a pairing bond. They can produce over 1000 eggs during their spawning. Angelfish are protective and caring parents. However, the black lace Angelfish can become very aggressive while breeding, therefore you will need to separate them from any other fish you have in the same tank.

Angelfish are some of the easiest tropical fish you can breed. If you want to breed Angelfish, purchase six breeders. Breeding pairs will separate themselves for the others when they mature.

Once they have paired off, move the pair to a separate tank. The Angelfish will choose a breeding site and clean up their area a couple of days before spawning.

Angelfish lay hundreds of eggs that will hatch within a few days. When you feed your adults well, it is generally safe to leave the fry with their parents.

You will be delighted with a wonderful addition to your tropical fish tank that you can enjoy for years, whether you choose to breed Angelfish or not.

Tips for a Clean Aquarium

by Sampson Zelder

Keeping your aquarium clean should be a relatively simple job once you establish a routine. Not only does it clean your water and the tank itself, but it also keeps your fish happy and healthy. Generally, youll need to clean your tank and the water once a month. Once you get into your aquarium maintenance routine, youll find it only takes a short amount of time to get it done.

Before starting on your cleaning, always unplug any electrical attachments or accessories on your tank, such as the filter, lights, or heaters you may have. Dont use any soap or detergent to clean your tank. These chemicals are harmful to fish and could easily make them very ill or even result in death. If those chemicals can make tank fish ill, then think about what flushing them down your sink each day does to the natural environment of fish in the wild.

The next step is to either vacuum or scrape your tank. Many aquarium shops say you should vacuum first, but this can often mean lowering the water levels before you begin scraping. When you scrape, you increase the density of algae in the water, so with reduced water levels this can raise the concentration to dangerously high levels, which can make your fish sick.

Vacuuming Your Tank ” An aquarium vacuum is a tube connected to a rubber hose. When you purchase your vacuum at an aquarium store, it will be called a Python. Its job is to drain a little water at the same time as it sucks up algae, dirt, debris, or any waste food in your tank. Remember to clean decorative effects and especially the gravel or tank stones at the bottom.

This task should be done as quickly as you can because your vacuum will siphon up quite a lot of water. Try not to remove any more than 20% of the total amount of water in the tank. If you spend too long vacuuming then you risk lowering your tanks water too far and you could harm your fish.

Scraping Your Tank ” To remove algae or grime from the sides of your tank and from any decorations or your filter, you need to use a sponge with a handle attached. The scrapers sponge should be the non-abrasive type or you risk scratching or damaging acrylic. The sponge is already designed for the removal of algae and grime, so once youve cleaned the tank, remember to clean the decorations and filter as well.

Once youve finished your vacuuming and scraping, begin filling the tank back to normal water levels. Remember not to use tap water in your aquarium. You should use always de-chlorinated water in your tank. When the water is back at a proper level, test the water for ammonia, nitrite and nitrate levels with your aquarium test kit. If you have a salt-water aquarium, then always check the salinity levels to avoid your fish becoming stressed and sick.
